How Pune Businesses Get Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity

I built a market-intelligence tool that tests exactly this — what AI answer engines actually say when asked about a specific city and category — and ran it on my own market: performance marketing in Pune.

The result was clarifying. One major AI provider named zero Pune-specific businesses across every question I asked it. Not one. Here's what that means, and what actually changes it.

What I found when I actually tested this

Across five real buyer-style questions ("best digital marketing agency in Pune for D2C brands," "who sets up GA4 tracking in Pune," and similar), one major AI provider gave generic procedural advice every time — "research online," "check reviews," "schedule a consultation" — and named not a single Pune business. Another provider named specific companies, but leaned heavily on ranked listicle sources rather than businesses with strong local review signals, and for the most technical question, said outright it didn't have enough information to name a local provider with confidence.

Why AI answer engines skip most local businesses entirely

An AI system can only cite what it can find, extract, and trust with confidence. A business with inconsistent information across its website and directories, no structured data, and marketing copy instead of plain statements of fact gives the model nothing solid to quote. So it defaults to generic advice, or to whatever ranked listicle happens to be easiest to summarise.

Ranking #1 on Google and being recommended by an AI tool are different contests. Right now, for most local categories, almost nobody has entered the second one.

What makes a Pune business AI-citable

  • Business name, services, and location stated identically across your website, Google Business Profile, and directories
  • Structured data (schema markup) on your key pages, giving an AI crawler a clean, unambiguous read instead of forcing it to guess from layout
  • Content that answers real questions in plain, confident statements of fact — the format an AI system can quote directly, not marketing language it has to interpret
  • A specific, narrow positioning an AI can attach a name to, rather than a generic "full-service" claim that reads the same as every competitor

The Pune-specific opportunity, right now

Because almost no local competitor has built AI-citable content yet, the businesses that structure their information this way first have a real chance to become the default name an AI system reaches for — not because they paid for it, but because they were the easiest, most trustworthy source to quote.
