Consultant or Agency? What Pune Businesses Should Actually Look For

Most of the well-reviewed marketing names in Pune are full-service agencies, serving dozens of clients through a rotating account team. A specialist consultant — which is how I work — is a different model entirely, and for a lot of businesses, it's the better fit.

Neither is universally right. Here's how to actually tell which one you need.

What's the real difference?

An agency sells you a team, a process, and coverage across many services at once. A consultant sells you direct access to one person who does the strategic thinking and often the hands-on setup themselves. You're trading breadth for depth, and a layer of account management for direct accountability.

When a full-service agency makes more sense

  • You need coverage across many channels at once and don't have the internal capacity to coordinate a handful of freelancers yourself
  • Your business is large enough that a bench of specialists (not one person) is genuinely needed
  • You want a single point of contact who abstracts away the individual specialists behind the scenes

When a specialist consultant makes more sense

  • You want the person quoting the work to be the person actually doing it, not someone junior who gets handed the account after the sale
  • Your priority right now is one specific fix — tracking, attribution, lead response — not a broad retainer
  • You'd rather pay for judgment on a smaller number of decisions than for process across a large one

The question isn't which model is better. It's whether you're buying coverage or buying direct accountability — and which one your actual problem needs.

Questions worth asking before you sign with either

  1. Who will actually work on my account? Ask by name. If the person pitching you isn't the person executing, know that upfront, not three months in.
  2. Do you build tracking before running ads, or after? The order tells you whether measurement is a real priority or an afterthought.
  3. Can I see a live dashboard, or only a monthly PDF? Real-time access is a good proxy for how much there is to hide.
  4. What happens if the first month doesn't work? A clear, honest answer here matters more than a confident sales pitch.
